Our Story

A Legacy of ServiceBuilt on Brotherhood & Community

Named in honor of Charles Ignatius Brown — co-founder of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity — the Ignatius Foundation carries forward a century-old tradition of service, scholarship, and brotherhood.

Our Origins

Named for a Founder.
Built for a Community.

On January 9, 1914, three visionary young men — A. Langston Taylor, Leonard F. Morse, and Charles Ignatius Brown — founded Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at Howard University. They envisioned an organization that would be "a part of" the general community rather than "apart from" it.

The Ignatius Foundation, the charitable arm of the Omicron Chi Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma in Suffolk County, carries that spirit forward. We stand in the gap for children, families, and communities — guided by the Fraternity's motto: "Culture For Service and Service For Humanity."

As "the People's Fraternity," Phi Beta Sigma has always welcomed all nationalities, religions, races, and abilities. With more than 225,000 members across 700+ chapters worldwide as of 2025, this tradition of inclusive service continues to grow.

Our Mission

Around the world, too many people face exclusion from the political, economic, and social institutions that shape their lives. We exist to change that reality. Guided by a vision of social justice, we work toward a world in which all individuals, communities, and peoples protect and fully express their human rights.

Our Vision

We envision people as active participants in the decisions that affect them, with knowledge, wealth, and resources shared equitably across society. Everyone deserves the freedom to achieve their full potential.

Our Motto

"Culture For Service and Service For Humanity."
